Can an introvert also be an entrepreneur?

Only you can answer this quest for yourself.

Working from your home helps since you only interact with people via social media or the telephone.

As with anything in life there are divergent paths and there is not a single path for everyone.

All paths lead to pros and cons that you must determine for yourself, and if you are willing to accept the responsibility for your choosing your path.

I offer this caveat, never spend more than your budget will allow and never go into debt to fund your freelancing business.

How comfortable and transparent are you working from home?

By transparent, I don’t mean giving out your personal information. I mean is being your authentic self.

Clients don’t purchase from people they don’t know or don’t trust.

Honing your interpersonal skills is a must to build trust through building relationships with visitors to your blog, website, and social media platforms.

It is how and how often you interact with others in your circle of followers and those following you. Are you helpful, do you answer questions, how often you blog, do you offer education, do you offer value. Why should someone interact with you if you don’t interact with them and other in your chosen niche.

Each individual must create their own schedule of interacting on social media and how much they are willing to interact online,

What does it take to become a freelancer?

I have written about this in posts on this blog. One post is The 7 P’s of Freelance Writing. It was written back some time ago.

In that post, I mentioned certain items that apply to general freelancing as well.

These items are:

  3. Professionalism –
  4. Polish –
  5. Personal Contact –
  6. Persistence –
  7. Patience –

I could write about what these words mean to me but if you want to be a freelancer, you will have to find out what these words mean to you in your business, because freelancing is a business, and it you fail to treat it like a business your business is destined to fail.

Call Yourself a Freelancer and They Will Beat a Path to Your Door

First, forget about that happening, especially if you’re an introvert.

Second, do not quit your day job until you are making enough to allow you to do so. Each person must make that determination on just how much money they need to live the lifestyle they wish to continue living or compromise living on.

Third, if you are in the United States, think about what the federal, state, and local government might think about you doing business from home if clients come to you.

Fourth, if you work for someone or a company that has a benefits package, are you willing to give that up and start paying your own way by freelancing full-time.

Fifth, consider the fact that as a freelancer you will be competing against other freelancers from around the world and some probably willing to work cheaper than you.

As a newbie freelancer, you have no portfolio, no reputation, and face it; no experience working with clients and understanding their needs.

Start slowly and build your credibility, reputation, brand and what is unique about what you have to offer potential clients so they choose you over another freelancer that has been doing it longer than you.

What is your Plan?

Have you thought about the following?

Do you even have a plan on how to proceed?

Have you written a business Plan?

How are you going to finance your freelancing?

Where are you going to work from?

Are you planning on establishing a separate business bank account?

What are you going to name your business?

Have you thought about a domain name for your website?

Are you going to create a blog?

If you are on social media, are going o create a separate business social media account.

Are you going to have a business phone and business cell phone separate from personal ones?

What about selling via a separate voice mail than your home voice mail?

Does this give you pause for thought?

I trust it does because there are many things to think about when calling yourself a freelancer and being willing to do whatever and however long it takes to become a freelancer making a living.

Many of the household names in online marketing have been at it for years. It is possible to take years to become an overnight success.

Any business that is still around started as a start-up and worked hard to become a success.

Entrepreneurs take note:

If you want to be in business as a freelancer you are considered a consultant or contractor you are responsible for all of the regulations for any business doing business in your area.

Take care to cover yourself with insurance and incorporation to protect your personal assets.

I am not an attorney and only suggest you consult one when starting your freelancing to protect yourself from a lawsuit or potential damages from your actions as a small business owner.

As an Entrepreneur

The money you make from freelancing is not yours, it belongs to the business you created and belongs to the business for future growth and success.

All you get is a salary for which you are libel for all taxes, withholding and any other required payments to the Federal, State, and Local governments.

If this is not what you are prepared to deal with on your own or hire a CPA, think hard if you are ready for freelancing.

Freelancing is not for the faint of heart.

Are You a Magpie, always looking for the next shiny object, the male Magpie is always on the look for the next shiny object to entice a mate with the number of shiny objects.

Many entrepreneurs feel that the more they can learn or listen to the newest webinar, buy the newest book, listen to the newest podcast, spend untold dollars on anything or everything from the next guru they hear about.

Everyone feels inadequate at some point, whether newbie or seasoned. No one can live their life in their comfort zone, especially when starting out.

Most people have heard of “Chicken Soup for the Soul” by Jack Canfield. He received one-hundred and forty-four rejections of “Chicken Soup for the Soul” before finally being published.

How do you think he felt? Maybe inadequate? Was his idea a good one or a bad one? Was he chasing shiny objects? No he kept moving forward. 

When is it time to walk the walk?

How many books do you need to read? How may programs do you need to buy? How many gurus do you need to listen to before you pull up your adult pants and get started doing?

If you’re afraid of failure, guess what. If you take personal responsibility for the outcome of your actions, you can learn more by failing than you can by success.

Failure is part of life. Do you think Thomas Edison was successful with every invention on the first try? No, but he did learn what didn’t work. The same goes for freelancers, entrepreneurs, and businesses. Each one must find what works for them.

There is, no one size fits all, if there were, every business would be the same to some degree.

You are an individual, you learn at a pace and mode that may be different from the next person. What you need to learn is what works for you and what makes you different from others.

There are myriad businesses, entrepreneurs, and freelancers to choose from. What makes you different from the crowd, why should someone trust you with their project? This is what you need to learn about yourself and exploit your differences to build a trusting environment with your clients. Clients will not work with someone they don’t trust or have some form of relationship with.

Human beings have strengths and weaknesses. The entrepreneur’s job is to identify them and use them to their advantage.

Stop reading and spending your cash on the next shiny object and start doing the work needed to become a success, whatever that means for you. Realize that what you consider success may not be what someone else considers success. Only compare yourself to you, never someone else.

Many people in business on the internet have heard the term “Content Marketing” but may not completely understand what the term means.

The Content Marketing Institute (The Content Marketing Institute is a place of resources and training for anyone interested in learning about content marketing) says of content marketing,

“Content Marketing – Formal Definition

Content marketing is the marketing and business process for creating and distributing relevant and valuable content to attract, acquire, and engage a clearly defined and understood target audience – with the objective of driving profitable customer action.

A content marketing strategy can leverage all story channels (print, online, in-person, mobile, social, etc.), be employed at any and all stages of the buying process, from attention-oriented strategies to retention and loyalty strategies, and include multiple buying groups.

Content marketing is comparable to what media companies do as their core business, except that in place of paid content or sponsorship as a measure of success, brands define success by ultimately selling more products or services.”

This may be a bit too formal for some. My definition of Content Marketing is this:

The creation of value added content (any medium such as a blog, website, social media, networking, etc.) that explains what you as an entrepreneur, freelancer or small business owner have to offer that is of benefit to your customers.

I would also like to add the definition of the term “copy” which I use quite often when writing about blog posts, articles, press releases (PR), etc.

According to the definition found in Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary Eleventh Edition “Copy” is:
4 a: matter to be set esp. for printing.

b: something considered printable or newsworthy – used without an article
c: text esp. of an advertisement

Copy is anything suitable for printing. Is a blog post suitable for printing? When you hit the post button, your post is electronically printed. Therefore, anything created that involves text is copy.

Content consists of video, eBooks, whitepapers, infographics, case studies, how-to guides, etc. Content is any media that positions you to drive traffic to your business with an audience looking for what you have to offer.
In subsequent posts, I will be covering more about the marketing aspect of content as it relates to your ideal customer.

What do I mean pay to play?

Facebook, created years ago, has a growing membership in the multimillions. Facebook frequently changes their algorithms, with subsequent algorithm changes, organic page likes fluctuate as does post reach, unless an account holder pays for expanded reach. The more you pay the greater the reach, these costs for expanded reach range from five dollars to two hundred dollars. The more you are willing to purchase reach the greater the reach. Promotion and advertising reach will cost you whatever you can afford. The more you can afford the greater the reach.

What is Reach?

Reach simply put, is the number of people that will see your Facebook post or advertisement.

Is Pay to Play Right for Your Business?

First, no business should go into debt, to fund their business and reaching out for new customers and advertising. Going into debt to fund your business is one way you quickly go out of business.

NOTE: Never spend more than you can comfortable afford on your business from revenue.

If you are an entrepreneur, freelancer, or small business, how much can you budget for paying to play against revenue to run your business is an extremely important equation. This is part of your marketing budget expense. What can you realistically afford without leaving the business short of funding and operational expenses? All businesses must know this number at all times. Put your account hat on and keep a handle on your working capital and budget items.

Whether entrepreneur or freelancer, you are a business, this is something that you must keep in mind. You must also realize that the business income is not your money; the money belongs to the business for operation and growth, not for paying personal living expenses.

Under funding, is a major cause of businesses closing down. Can you afford to spend money you don’t have? Most people who spend more than they make are soon in deep financial trouble. Don’t be one of them!

If you plan is having money and time to be free by starting a business, don’t. For a business to be viable, you will be spending many hours, weeks, and months devoting both to the business.

There is a dramatic learning curve to creating a startup. Most startups cannot afford to outsource many of the day-to-day operations. In the beginning, these operations are up to you until the business can afford the costs of outsourcing which isn’t cheap.

This is what true pay to play is all about. You want to freelance, or create a startup; it is going to cost you to join the ranks of entrepreneur. Don’t spend what you don’t have from the business.

I have seen Freelancers on different social sites asking about various places where they can find freelance jobs.

If you think freelancing will make you more income than your current job, think again, because there are no guarantees in freelancing, just as there are no guarantees in life. It is all about how hard you are willing to put forth the effort and determination.

Some sites where freelancers can bid on jobs are:

Elance – https://www.elance.com/ – Lower budget, highly competitive, money held in escrow account; until job poster accepts work and authorizes payment. Elance takes a percentage.

Employment Crossing – http://www.employmentcrossing.com/# : After a three-day trial, membership is $49.95 per month.

Freelancer – https://www.freelancer.com/ : Low paying, but free to register; highly competitive from bidders in countries around the world.

Guru – http://www.guru.com/ : Low budget, and highly competitive; Guru takes a percentage.

oDesk – https://www.odesk.com/ : Low budget, highly competitive. oDesk works on a percentage basis

MiNeeds – http://www.mineeds.com/ : Standard package is $24.99 per month.

Writing Crossing – http://writingcrossing.com: After a three-day trial, membership is $49.95 per month.

These are only a few notification sites where you can bid on the posted jobs with no guarantee of obtaining work on any of these sites, which are only a small portion of available sites on the internet.

Would you buy something without a warranty? Then, why would you pay for only a chance at seeing posted jobs only to post a bid or offer your services to someone with no guarantee of a job.

It does not seem right to pay only for opportunities to bid without knowing you can actually get freelance work after paying just for a chance.

There are other productive ways of finding freelance jobs locally at first, which will help you build a portfolio and gain experience in your chosen freelance niche.

No matter how much you may hate it, do not be in a hurry to quit your day job, it pays the bills for now and a paycheck is guaranteed if you put in the time.

Think about this: More than 80 percent of freelancers have side jobs accord to The Freelancers Union. Did you think all freelancers made tons of money; well think again, the number of freelancers making self-sufficient income is small.

Take freelancing slowly; build your reputation, because YOU are your brand. Freelancing is a big business and you need to learn the business part of freelancing as well as what your specific freelance niche is all about, this takes time and a good deal of reading about your niche so you are educated in what it takes to be a successful freelancer in that niche.

The more you know the better equipped you will be to understand the clients pain points and be able to address them. If you cannot understand a client’s needs, how will you be able to handle their needs?

People often ask the question, “Can you reliably make a living freelance writing?”

The answer depends on many factors, and individual client needs.

First, freelance writers must educate clients what freelance writing is.

Some clients equate freelance writers with web designers wanting various languages such as Perl, Drupal, Joomla, building shopping carts, and more, this is programming, not freelance writing.

Other clients may request knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Adobe Pro, Quark, CRM, and CMS software, to name a few.

Newcomers to freelance writing will find it hard to acquire clients if they are not up to date on the various software programs listed above, and the software clients may be using in their business.

Freelance writers must have a working knowledge of copyright infringement, plagiarism, and the latest FTC rules if they work in the United States.

The quote below posted with permission from Tim McGuinness during a discussion about the question, “Can you reliably make a living freelance writing?”

As a business that hires writers, you all need to understand the nature of the business models that now exist. When content became universal, it also lowered its value – not to me, but to the ultimate publishers of that content. In retail for example, the norm is to scrape content from other websites – retailers who consume vast amounts of content are not willing to pay much for it. If they can get duplicated content put up for $1 they will, until they get in trouble. What you all also need to understand it that a writer is just a part of a process – content production requires coordination, production management, quality assurance, and delivery mechanisms. These are all fixed costs, thus the writer makes less. There are still boutique projects out there, but increasingly, writing is a commodity job. You make as much as you produce. Sorry for the bad news, but this is the reality of the job now.”  ~ Tim McGuinness, Ph.D.

Second, some clients specify work for writers in India, Philippines, and other non-native English countries around the world if you attempt to find jobs on the various job boards, which are content mills and can hurt reputations.

Competing against non-native English countries accepting low wages for assignments, do not quit your day job until you can continue living the lifestyle you are currently living.

It could take decades for you to become an overnight success as a newcomer to freelance writing and establishing a reputation as a quality writer.

Established writers have spent years building their reputation, many while working a day job and writing part-time until their writing could pay for their lifestyle. Established writers have credentials newcomers do not have, and must build by writing.

Building a portfolio of work takes time, hard work, education, writing, and patience.

Call me harsh, pessimistic, or overly critical, I prefer realist learning daily, while working on my PhD from the University of Hard Knocks.

Freelance writers must commit themselves to writing daily, learning new software, applying the rules of perfect grammar and punctuation in their writing to establish themselves as quality writers.

Freelance writers are entrepreneurs who must embody honesty, integrity, and quality along with transparency and authenticity in all they do.

A new form of marketing is building a business platform, networking, and building a following.

Writing is a business! One must spend the time and energy required to grow it into a successful enterprise. There are no short cuts if writers desire acceptance as serious writers of quality.

Why did you start a blog?

There are many reasons to start a blog.

  2. Blog about books you have read
  3. Host virtual book tours
  4. Post book reviews
  5. Blog about public figures’ tours, appearances, entertainment … etc.
  6. Blog about your products, new product release date, or your services
  7. Blog about your books with links where to purchase them
  8. Blog about writing to help new writers
  9. Blog about SEO, Marketing, Social Media, Networking … etc.

A blog is about what you choose as your subject. A blog should engage, establish relationships, engage readers, help your readers, and offer information that educates the reader about your product or service, about the subject you choose as the base of your blog.

The blog headline should inform the reader what to expect to find on your blog. It must be relevant to searches performed by searchers on the Internet.

Productivity is the key to completing your story, website design, or whatever your project is about; it is about completing it before the deadline, and about never missing a deadline you given yourself for a project.

First, consider the fact that there are only twenty-four hours in a day. This is finite, what you complete during this finite time frame is up to you.

If you are running a small business or working as a freelancer, both entrepreneurs, wasting time worrying about social media, networking, a website, a blog, SEO, and administrating your business, when are you going to be productive?

Reducing your twenty-four hours significantly when you factor in sleep, eating, personal time, family time, etc, how can you be productive?

What are you willing to give up or can afford to delegate to become more productive?

If you cannot afford to hire a virtual assistant, then email, and social media are up to you.

Limiting the time you spend focusing on your business is a loss of productivity.

As a businessperson, you should never spend money you cannot afford to spend without going into debt. Do not use your credit cards to pay for your business, you will never succeed if you spend money at high interest rates, or outside your business budget.

Many businesses fail because of financial problems. The money your business makes is money you need to grow your business, do not think you can use it any way you wish, think again; it is not yours, and it is the businesses’ money.

If you have a blog or website, you may find more internet trolls than qualified leads for your business visiting your sites. There are some people who seem to gather satisfaction from hacking websites, and doing what they can to sell you software or training you do not need.

Is the word integrity, overused by businesses of all sizes?

As a freelance writer and editor, integrity is the core of being an entrepreneur. If it is you, than how can it be overused? All businesses should be authentic, open, and transparent.

Does integrity exist in today’s world?

As an entrepreneur working solo, honesty, integrity, and quality are foremost in the concept of being a freelance writer, blogger, editor, and reviewer learning ethical marketing.

As a business, signed a business ethics pledge.

What does integrity mean?

Per WordWeb ProTM, Integrity = Moral soundness.

Is your business a reflection of your moral compass? If not, why not? It should be if you believe in a type of morality that exemplifies you as a person.

When branding your business, you are the brand. What you stand for should be what your business stands for.

Should businesses maintain integrity?

All businesses should maintain a policy of integrity to remain in business, especially small to medium sized businesses.

As an entrepreneur or small business, what do you stand for?

All businesses should represent the owner’s philosophy, and moral code.

If you don’t have integrity, you have nothing. You can’t buy it. You can have all the money in the world, but if you are not a moral and ethical person, you really have nothing.” ~ Henry Kravis

As entrepreneurs, working with customers, is offering you, and your moral soundness.

Business is not just about money, it is about helping your customer and building a loyal advocate for your business.

If you are searching for validation in your marketing system, your business model, and your business, you will have to wait a long time.

There are people called guru or expert. Their main aim is to separate you from your money.

If you are like most people trying to start a business, or considering working online for some extra money, never, never spend more than you can afford after you pay all of your bills.

I have seen programs and opportunities from $29 to over $1,000 from people selling training or helping them with a book.

I would like to meet the average person who can afford hundreds of dollars with no guarantee of a return for the money spent.

You should be learning and working on your own, and what is right for you, and never spend more than you can afford.

Businesses spend revenue, and never go into debt to grow the business. No one can predict the economy, how much each individual’s budget can afford on other than bills.

It is not about searching for validation from someone, or seeking validation following a business model of someone else. Businesses need to be themselves and not worry about validation.

A business needs to stress customer satisfaction. Customers create businesses revenue, and create a successful business.

Forget validation, stress customer satisfaction, never spend more than you can truly afford by budgeting, this is how to run and grow a business.

Try it out and see if your business succeeds. When a business succeeds, that is validation that it is working, look always to the business and always be flexible and ready to change what is not working.
