Because of a litany of medical conditions and age, I have not been feeling well and unable to get to my office that is located in a walkout basement.

Me and two dogs. A 35-pound Puggles (Beagle-Pug Mix), and a 70-pound Pit Bull Mix for company and distractions just like many writers.

It is hard to work on things when you can’t trust your own body not to betray you. I will not go into the conditions or the battery of tests. Suffice it to say that for the past two months have been interesting and restrictive.

With a semi-diagnoses, changes in medications, old-school control of Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 it has been a somewhat challenging time for me and my wife.

I have only been back in my office for about a week. There are still appointments with a neurologist, the ones with a PA and a cardiologist are done for now.

I have been researching for information for organizing my workload.

As I learn more software, there will be more time broken into projects to be scheduled to practice time management.

As a freelancer for hire, it is time to organize the administrative part of my solo-entrepreneurship and gain better control of the projects contracted and where they stand.

With a bit of luck and my taking better care of myself, I will be around for a while longer and posting on a more consistent schedule.

Working as a freelancer, I have found freelancing frustrating, depressive, and irritating to the point where I have thought of saying, “I quit!” This is when I need to walk away, regroup myself, and get back to learning more about marketing my services while working on any outstanding projects.

Most potential clients already have someone whom they trust offering the same services I do, so how do I find people willing to work with me, because of finances, there is less than a shoestring budget to work with. When living on a fixed income, there is never enough money to work with a mentor, purchase programs, travel expenses to conferences, lodging, food, and price of the conference ticket.

In hindsight, there are many things I would have done differently, age should not stop anyone wishing becoming an entrepreneur. Just do not quit your day job until freelancing will allow you to keep the lifestyle you are accustomed to.

Freelancers are independent contractors; you pay taxes, purchase insurance, need a space to work, pay for any licenses to run a business. Freelancers are entrepreneurs running a business, and the money is not yours, it belongs to the business and your business pays you a salary.

Freelancers need an accountant, or learn accounting to keep clear concise records in case of an IRS audit.

All entrepreneurs are liable for paying taxes, employee withholding, Medicare, sales tax, state taxes, business licenses, and possibly medical, dental, and vision insurance. This in itself can cause entrepreneurs more than their share of frustration.

Another thing that can cause freelancers ulcers is pricing their product or services to be competitive. When outsourcing, you will have to train your virtual employee to work the way you would.

There are numerous writing style guides, which writers must follow for specific writing assignments.

What type of writing assignment are you working on?

  • Article
  • Blog
  • Book
  • Business
  • Ghost
  • Medical
  • News
  • Scientific
  • Speech
  • Technical
  • Term Paper

These are only a few assignments freelance writer might be working on. Each has their own unique writing style.

Most journalists use the Associated Press and Briefing on Media Law (AP) style guide, but some newspapers have their own in-house style.

Book authors lean toward The Chicago Manual of Style.

Business and speechwriters would follow the American Management Association (AMA) style guide.

Most magazines have a style that can be determined by reading the specific magazine.

Style guides also have a preferred dictionary.

  • Associated Press Style Guide uses the Webster’s New World College Dictionary as its reference.
  • Council of Science Editors in Scientific Style and Format: The CSE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers for sciences.
  • The Chicago Manual of Style uses the Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary as its reference.
  • Academic style uses the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers and does not specify a reference dictionary.
  • Science style uses the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary as its reference, also use the CSE.
  • Technical writing would also use the APA style guide.

As you can see, depending on the writing assignment, a trip to the local library or bookstore might be in your future to obtain the proper style guide, or some search engine time finding style guides to assist you with your assignment.

If you are working with a client, what do they want could be something completely different.

If you have the bookcase shelf space, how many style guides do you need to write?

For most of what I do as a freelance writer, I use the Chicago style because it is the one I trained with. All writers are welcome to use any style guide, but will your writing work for specific purposes.

In the past, free meant no cost to you, if you are like me and remember when free meant free, you have found recently that free does not mean free anymore as it did in the past.

Numerous offers come my way almost daily in emails, and social media from individuals offering a free PDF, free book, and free modules of courses.

When checking these offers out, to obtain the offer you must pay shipping and handling, registering for a subscription, or a product  upsale by the person making the offer that you must complete to get the free item from them. There is nothing free if there is any cost associated with what is supposed to be a free item.

I’ve received the same supposedly free offer for a book from more than one person offering a free book from the author. If the book is free, why must the book be available only if the person requesting the book is willing to pay a shipping and postage fee for a copy of the free book? I don’t see anything free in an offer like this, do you?

I’ve had offers for programs, CDs, books, and more in emails from numerous people. I do not jump and pay money just because I might want the free offer. I do not see anything free if there are associated costs for me to receive any so-called free item.

Free used as an adjective by definition means, “costing nothing”. As consumers, are we now accepting that the word “free” no longer has the same definition or meaning found in dictionaries? Are we willing to allow someone to use words as they wish and no longer follow the lexicon of English?

Charging any fee associated with an offer of a free item by the definition of free, is a misrepresentation of the offer. Why would anyone trust the person making the offer, or anything he or she says, or represents? I for one am tired of free offers that require any payment associated with the offer for me to receive a free item.

It is my desire that this blog starts conversations, start thinking about what blogs should offer, and may engage readers with the content. Perhaps hired for one or more of my services by a blog visitor, ask a question about the services or about writing, marketing or social media as I am a believer in paying it forward.

Why did you start a blog?

There are many reasons to start a blog.

  1. Blog about books in progress
  2. Blog about books you have read
  3. Host virtual book tours
  4. Post book reviews
  5. Blog about public figures’ tours, appearances, entertainment … etc.
  6. Blog about your products, new product release date, or your services
  7. Blog about your books with links where to purchase them
  8. Blog about writing to help new writers
  9. Blog about SEO, Marketing, Social Media, Networking … etc.

A blog is about what you choose as your subject. A blog should engage, establish relationships, engage readers, help your readers, and offer information that educates the reader about your product or service, about the subject you choose as the base of your blog.

The blog headline should inform the reader what to expect to find on your blog. It must be relevant to searches performed by searchers on the Internet.

Productivity is the key to completing your story, website design, or whatever your project is about; it is about completing it before the deadline, and about never missing a deadline you given yourself for a project.

First, consider the fact that there are only twenty-four hours in a day. This is finite, what you complete during this finite time frame is up to you.

If you are running a small business or working as a freelancer, both entrepreneurs, wasting time worrying about social media, networking, a website, a blog, SEO, and administrating your business, when are you going to be productive?

Reducing your twenty-four hours significantly when you factor in sleep, eating, personal time, family time, etc, how can you be productive?

What are you willing to give up or can afford to delegate to become more productive?

If you cannot afford to hire a virtual assistant, then email, and social media are up to you.

Limiting the time you spend focusing on your business is a loss of productivity.

As a businessperson, you should never spend money you cannot afford to spend without going into debt. Do not use your credit cards to pay for your business, you will never succeed if you spend money at high interest rates, or outside your business budget.

Many businesses fail because of financial problems. The money your business makes is money you need to grow your business, do not think you can use it any way you wish, think again; it is not yours, and it is the businesses’ money.

If you have a blog or website, you may find more internet trolls than qualified leads for your business visiting your sites. There are some people who seem to gather satisfaction from hacking websites, and doing what they can to sell you software or training you do not need.

Everyone wishing to write needs to work on their vocabulary by reading all manner of the written word from periodicals, books, and even the lexicon.

As Mark Twain said, “The difference between the almost right word & the right word is really a large matter–it’s the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.” 

It behooves every writer to grow their vocabulary and not always rely on the same words when writing for the web, poetry, or prose.

Writers by nature must also be avid readers. While listening to Ray Bradbury speaking at a meeting of the writers group, Southwest Manuscriptors, Mr. Bradbury told everyone in attendance to read everything they could get their hands on, the classics, good writing, and even bad writing.

By reading the work of others, it is that writers learn how to write. By reading, do writers find out how to construct sentences, learn tenses, and fine tune consistency while writing.

Commanding a large vocabulary comes with a caveat. The responsibility to use words that intelligibly and distinctly convey your meaning to the reader. You must choose your words wisely from your vocabulary that is well suited for the educational level of the reader.

When writing for most audiences, forget using jargon, use plain English unless you are writing about technology to engineers, or a legal paper read by attorneys. Your language must fit the audience.

During the 1960s, Army technical manuals were written for a person with only an eighth grade education.

With knowledge comes great responsibility in using said knowledge wisely.

Where do you start once you make the decision to become a Freelance Writer?

First, double check your reason why you want to be a freelance writer.

There are many writers trying to make a living writing, unfortunately, there are also many writers who must have a second source of income to cover bills, mortgage, living expenses, and cover medical and business insurance.

The jobs do not come to you; you need to hustle for jobs, price the project, administrate the entrepreneurship, build a portfolio of work, obtain testimonials, create a brand, build a reputation, and obtain referrals from clients at the minimum.

You should know your way around a website, how to update your site, and how to promote it via multichannel marketing.

Not what you were thinking is it.

Working as a full-time freelance writer and editor since February of 2006, and having published a Christmas short story, written over 300 web articles, worked as a web copyeditor, manuscript editor, PR writer, book reviewer with over 120 reviews, and earning a degree from the University of Hard Knocks.

Any type of freelancing is not something where you can hang out a shingle which states you are a freelancer, and expect clients to beat a path to your door with fists full of money for you.

Many job boards are not free and you will be competing for low paying writing jobs while posting a bid and competing with people from around the world and willing to work for peanuts.

Second, as a freelance writer, what type of writing projects you wish to do.

Choose whether you are a generalist, or a specialist. You can find so-called gurus that prefer one type to another. Personally, it is up to the individual writer as to the type of writing projects they choose to write.

It is up to every freelancer to find their own path determined by their personality, moral fiber, hard work, and how they choose the assignments.

Third, freelance writing is about constantly writing and making each piece better than your last.

Never compare yourself to another writer, be the best writer you can and always try to improve your writing by reading other authors to gain insights about what works and what does not work for the reader.

Is the word integrity, overused by businesses of all sizes?

As a freelance writer and editor, integrity is the core of being an entrepreneur. If it is you, than how can it be overused? All businesses should be authentic, open, and transparent.

Does integrity exist in today’s world?

As an entrepreneur working solo, honesty, integrity, and quality are foremost in the concept of being a freelance writer, blogger, editor, and reviewer learning ethical marketing.

As a business, signed a business ethics pledge.

What does integrity mean?

Per WordWeb ProTM, Integrity = Moral soundness.

Is your business a reflection of your moral compass? If not, why not? It should be if you believe in a type of morality that exemplifies you as a person.

When branding your business, you are the brand. What you stand for should be what your business stands for.

Should businesses maintain integrity?

All businesses should maintain a policy of integrity to remain in business, especially small to medium sized businesses.

As an entrepreneur or small business, what do you stand for?

All businesses should represent the owner’s philosophy, and moral code.

As entrepreneurs, working with customers, is offering you, and your moral soundness.

Business is not just about money, it is about helping your customer and building a loyal advocate for your business.

From personal experience, the answer is still obscure.

Many of the posts on Google + will remind one of being on Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter with all of the inane personal posts.

From a purely personal perspective, over 80 percent of messages received are not relevant to learning, connecting, or helping any entrepreneur with their business. This statistic does not bode well for making connections and marketing your business.

A piece of advice for Google + users, choose the people you follow wisely and make sure their posts are relevant to your business, if they are not, do not waste your time reading their posts.

Social media is NOT about followers, it is however, about relevant followers, please do yourself a favor, NEVER buy followers or likes, which can make you look desperate and penalized in Google ratings or worse.

No business or entrepreneur sets up to look desperate for customers. Desperation ruins reputation faster than client’s bad opinions of a business.

Any business must be authentic, if nothing you do or use is not relevant to your business, how authentic is it.

From personal examination, as far as social media platforms go, more businesses are on Google + than many of the other social platforms.

The role of social media it to engage like minds or to follow thought leaders, you do not have to follow everyone that follows you. Only follow those that have something to say that is relevant to you or your business. Social media is not about what you had for lunch or trying to sell you followers or something else you are not interested in, social media is about establishing relationships and learning.

If you garner anything from this post, let it be this; social media platforms are meant to engage, build relationships, and most importantly, help people.
