There are many goals to content marketing.

  1. Lead Generation
  2. Driving traffic to your website
  3. Branding
  4. Telling your story
  5. Telling people about your product or service
  6. Add value through relevant information
  7. Building a following
  8. Turn followers into clients
  9. Build relationships

This is by no means a complete list, but you get the idea.

Content should inform and educate visitors to your website how you are the one to help them with your product or service.

Many people begin searching on the internet for information about a certain subject or How-to Guides because they have a need to satisfy a curiosity or need to learn something needed for a project or possibly a business need. Perhaps a person is someone for whom writing is as scary as insects are for others, a “pain point”. There are many freelancers that can write content, what do you have to offer that would make them hire you?

Does your content help them with this pain point? Is your content relevant? What separates you from other freelance writers?

Individuals and businesses may have many pain points. There are non-geeks that may need a website built, others may need content for blogs and webpages, some may need reviews, and authors may need editors.

Who is your product or service aimed at? That person is your audience. Why do you want to sell a product or service? Is it to make money or help your client with their needs?

The first order of business should be to build relationships with your ideal audience. Once you have built a relationship of trust you may have a loyal client and be in a position to request a referral to gain more clients.

The best method of advertising is word of mouth. If your content marketing is relevant, informative, and educational your visitors will spread the word about your site. This is true organic traffic.

Organic traffic from many different sources will raise your position on search engines.

Does your content fulfill the needs of your audience and does your site have an easy way for the visitors to ask questions or connect with you?

All sites should have some easy way of interaction with the site owner.

Businesses should listen to their clients and visitors.

This is the main goal of content marketing.

As a freelancer, entrepreneur, or business flexibility and change are omnipresent; as the responsible party, you need to be quick on your feet to address what is working and what isn’t working.

In my case, there is too much taking up time and not allowing me to concentrate on what is more important, writing and learning, to this end I am refocusing on my writing, blog posts, and taking courses that I am registered for.

Believing in lifelong learning, it is time to begin learning more about the interests I have in relation to being a well-rounded freelance writer and marketer.

Everyone wanting to work online must have a working knowledge of basic HTML, SEO, Social Media, Marketing, and Content Marketing to grow their business. Whether working solo, partnership, freelancer, or whatever you call what you do online, or brick and mortar you are a businessperson and must learn about how different business models operate. Even authors are business people and are entrepreneurs.

Businesses must be open to the myriad changes possible as technology and business opportunities that arise. To be flexible to be cognitive to these changes one needs to be open to refocusing how to achieve the goals of your business.

When refocusing, questions will naturally present themselves. This is a time to re-evaluate if you need to learn something new, revisit your goals, or begin outsourcing some of the administrative chores to a VA (Virtual Assistant) to perform these tasks to free up your time to make your business grow.

Is it time for you to refocus your business and join me on the journey to rediscover the joy of running a business or being a freelancer and finding the passion you once had. Without what you do bringing joy to you, why are you doing it? Is it just for money? If it isn’t fun, it will become drudgery and had to keep the civility in the business. Frustration leads to contempt for the business and family as the burdens grow.

Refocus on why you started your business in the first place. Was it because you felt you had something that made you feel good and thought you might be able to help customers and make some money as well.

Refocusing will bring the passion back you initially, and help your business prosper and grow. Enjoy the journey!

What do I mean pay to play?

Facebook, created years ago, has a growing membership in the multimillions. Facebook frequently changes their algorithms, with subsequent algorithm changes, organic page likes fluctuate as does post reach, unless an account holder pays for expanded reach. The more you pay the greater the reach, these costs for expanded reach range from five dollars to two hundred dollars. The more you are willing to purchase reach the greater the reach. Promotion and advertising reach will cost you whatever you can afford. The more you can afford the greater the reach.

What is Reach?

Reach simply put, is the number of people that will see your Facebook post or advertisement.

Is Pay to Play Right for Your Business?

First, no business should go into debt, to fund their business and reaching out for new customers and advertising. Going into debt to fund your business is one way you quickly go out of business.

NOTE: Never spend more than you can comfortable afford on your business from revenue.

If you are an entrepreneur, freelancer, or small business, how much can you budget for paying to play against revenue to run your business is an extremely important equation. This is part of your marketing budget expense. What can you realistically afford without leaving the business short of funding and operational expenses? All businesses must know this number at all times. Put your account hat on and keep a handle on your working capital and budget items.

Whether entrepreneur or freelancer, you are a business, this is something that you must keep in mind. You must also realize that the business income is not your money; the money belongs to the business for operation and growth, not for paying personal living expenses.

Under funding, is a major cause of businesses closing down. Can you afford to spend money you don’t have? Most people who spend more than they make are soon in deep financial trouble. Don’t be one of them!

If you plan is having money and time to be free by starting a business, don’t. For a business to be viable, you will be spending many hours, weeks, and months devoting both to the business.

There is a dramatic learning curve to creating a startup. Most startups cannot afford to outsource many of the day-to-day operations. In the beginning, these operations are up to you until the business can afford the costs of outsourcing which isn’t cheap.

This is what true pay to play is all about. You want to freelance, or create a startup; it is going to cost you to join the ranks of entrepreneur. Don’t spend what you don’t have from the business.

During the last few of weeks of 2014, how did your 2014 goals list compare to what you accomplished in 2014?

Are you willing to expend the time and effort required during the year 2015 to achieve all items on your 2015 goals list?

Have you established your editorial calendar for your blog in 2015?

Does your business have a blog? Why or why doesn’t your business have a blog?

Every business needs a blog. Businesses that have a website should have a blog as part of their website or a standalone blog to engage customers, to keep customers updated on what is new in the business.

A blog is the perfect method of interacting with customers through your clear call to action. A call to action may be as simple as getting them to use your contact form or some other action that will tell you what your customers think and want on your site.

In addition to a blog or website, businesses need a social media presence to inform potential customers of information about themselves through interpersonal communication. The main point of social media is to establish relationships with individuals that may be in need of what your business offers.

Social media is also a good platform to mention a sale, discount, survey, or what is happening in a business. Social media allows businesses to learn what customers are looking for by asking questions or have a complaint about something that a business may be able to help with.

Using social media allows businesses to view the pulse of what people want through what they share. How businesses are using social media to their advantage in finding new customers and how businesses use social media for brand marketing.

No one can learn the nuances of social media overnight. In the era of digital, social media and mobile is necessary for businesses to survive and thrive in the digital world we live in.

2015 is a new start for every business from freelancer to large corporation to learn new technologies and use them to their advantage in establishing and growing brand awareness.

Using technology is paramount for entrepreneurs to compete with larger businesses in the digital market.

Annually entrepreneurism is growing worldwide because individuals can no longer rely on the economy on a global scale. It is up to individuals to create their own economy through entrepreneurism. Taking courses in entrepreneurship is no longer a luxury but a necessity in these times of global economic uncertainty facing everyone. There are no longer jobs where one could follow in their father or grandfather’s company.

Those seeking work as more people retire and more jobs outsourced to countries because of lower pay and tax breaks, gainful employment is becoming a myth. Individuals have to fend for themselves in creating a living wage.

Is it easy being an entrepreneur? The short answer is no. Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart, but it can be rewarding for those willing to work hard and gin the knowledge required to be a successful entrepreneur in today’s economy.

People often ask the question, “Can you reliably make a living freelance writing?”

The answer depends on many factors, and individual client needs.

First, freelance writers must educate clients what freelance writing is.

Some clients equate freelance writers with web designers wanting various languages such as Perl, Drupal, Joomla, building shopping carts, and more, this is programming, not freelance writing.

Other clients may request knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Adobe Pro, Quark, CRM, and CMS software, to name a few.

Newcomers to freelance writing will find it hard to acquire clients if they are not up to date on the various software programs listed above, and the software clients may be using in their business.

Freelance writers must have a working knowledge of copyright infringement, plagiarism, and the latest FTC rules if they work in the United States.

The quote below posted with permission from Tim McGuinness during a discussion about the question, “Can you reliably make a living freelance writing?”

As a business that hires writers, you all need to understand the nature of the business models that now exist. When content became universal, it also lowered its value – not to me, but to the ultimate publishers of that content. In retail for example, the norm is to scrape content from other websites – retailers who consume vast amounts of content are not willing to pay much for it. If they can get duplicated content put up for $1 they will, until they get in trouble. What you all also need to understand it that a writer is just a part of a process – content production requires coordination, production management, quality assurance, and delivery mechanisms. These are all fixed costs, thus the writer makes less. There are still boutique projects out there, but increasingly, writing is a commodity job. You make as much as you produce. Sorry for the bad news, but this is the reality of the job now.”  ~ Tim McGuinness, Ph.D.

Second, some clients specify work for writers in India, Philippines, and other non-native English countries around the world if you attempt to find jobs on the various job boards, which are content mills and can hurt reputations.

Competing against non-native English countries accepting low wages for assignments, do not quit your day job until you can continue living the lifestyle you are currently living.

It could take decades for you to become an overnight success as a newcomer to freelance writing and establishing a reputation as a quality writer.

Established writers have spent years building their reputation, many while working a day job and writing part-time until their writing could pay for their lifestyle. Established writers have credentials newcomers do not have, and must build by writing.

Building a portfolio of work takes time, hard work, education, writing, and patience.

Call me harsh, pessimistic, or overly critical, I prefer realist learning daily, while working on my PhD from the University of Hard Knocks.

Freelance writers must commit themselves to writing daily, learning new software, applying the rules of perfect grammar and punctuation in their writing to establish themselves as quality writers.

Freelance writers are entrepreneurs who must embody honesty, integrity, and quality along with transparency and authenticity in all they do.

A new form of marketing is building a business platform, networking, and building a following.

Writing is a business! One must spend the time and energy required to grow it into a successful enterprise. There are no short cuts if writers desire acceptance as serious writers of quality.

While going through my email, a usual task, to see if there was anything of interest.

I received some offers and because of past experiences knew that the offers meant money.

I hate “noreply” emails, anyway, to date, only a couple of people understand the phrase “I don’t have the money” to mean exactly that.

As a soon to be septuagenarian, I along with many others living on a fixed income do not desire to go into debt on dubious offers of some potential income while wondering if they should eat or purchase their medications for the month. Personally, I have ten medications, but only get nine because the pharmacy is having trouble getting my B-12 injectable required every other week.

Are sellers of webinars, books, programs, online training …etc. not getting the point that not everyone has money for books, programs … etc., and when they say they do not have money; that is what they mean.

The sellers are loath to offer any information about any free information because it might cut into their profit instead of helping information seekers of their journey toward knowledge.

What sellers fail to realize it that by helping a knowledge seeker,  the seeker may one day be able to afford the sellers program; How about that?

I have questions 

When did the philosophy of paying it forward disappear?

Am I that old or delusional to believe in paying it forward?

Has society become about the one with no regard for others?

I refuse to believe that offering products of services at a reasonable price is still a good practice, and quality is what entrepreneurs and businesses should offer as a standard while also offering the best customer service possible, and believing what customers tell you.

While earning my PhD from the University of Hard Knocks and a DIY marketer for my services, I am a firm believer in answering any and all questions in a philosophy of paying it forward.

I have some work in progress that will educate and inform readers in an honest way about the subject of freelancing, and procrastination. It might seem hard to some, but life is hard if you are willing to dabble into the realm of entrepreneurship.

I do not believe in sugar coating reality. One reality is that it may take years to become an overnight success through long hours and hard work.

There are no short cuts in life, just as there are no short cuts to being an authentic person, which also takes hard work.

If you have the money to outsource your marketing, DIY is not something you might care about, for those who cannot afford outsourcing costs, think about DIY marketing.

I call DIY marketing, grassroots marketing. 

DIY obviously means you are doing your own marketing for a reason. The main reason is the expense of outsourcing your marketing, or it might be the fact that you just do not know who should be your outsourcer for marketing.

There are many outsourcers. The question is about experience in relation to cost. No outsourcer can guarantee an infusion of customers, traffic, conversions, or other so-called promises while being ethical in marketing your business, which is your brand reputation.

All brands should stand for honesty, integrity, and quality. 

DIY Marketing is about establishing a brand that is authentic, helpful, respectful of customer’s needs, and transparent.

Marketing is about establishing relationships with potential and existing customers.

What DIY marketing is 

  • About building relationships
  • Building customer loyalty
  • Building customer relationships
  • Customers spreading the word about your product or services
  • Establishing an Internet presence
  • Excellent customer service
  • Helping customers determine the product or service that best suits their needs
  • Integrity in dealing with customers
  • Quality products or services
  • Understanding your customer
  • Understanding your customer’s needs

Unbelievably, word of mouth is still the best way to advertise and grow a business.

Social media is one of the largest wastes of time for any business.

From a personal perspective, social media is getting worse every day. More people are using social media to inform people about lunch, and other worthless non-relevant sharing of tasteless political, religious posts.

Individuals have the right to their opinions, and individuals have the right not read what people have to say.

Do not waste time on non-relevant post wasting your productive time.

Businesses need to be proactive in helping customers and productive.

Any form of marketing takes time and work, DIY marketing is no different except the business owner and employees have total control of the marketing message.

Is the word integrity, overused by businesses of all sizes?

As a freelance writer and editor, integrity is the core of being an entrepreneur. If it is you, than how can it be overused? All businesses should be authentic, open, and transparent.

Does integrity exist in today’s world?

As an entrepreneur working solo, honesty, integrity, and quality are foremost in the concept of being a freelance writer, blogger, editor, and reviewer learning ethical marketing.

As a business, signed a business ethics pledge.

What does integrity mean?

Per WordWeb ProTM, Integrity = Moral soundness.

Is your business a reflection of your moral compass? If not, why not? It should be if you believe in a type of morality that exemplifies you as a person.

When branding your business, you are the brand. What you stand for should be what your business stands for.

Should businesses maintain integrity?

All businesses should maintain a policy of integrity to remain in business, especially small to medium sized businesses.

As an entrepreneur or small business, what do you stand for?

All businesses should represent the owner’s philosophy, and moral code.

As entrepreneurs, working with customers, is offering you, and your moral soundness.

Business is not just about money, it is about helping your customer and building a loyal advocate for your business.

If you can afford the cost of mentorship, good for you, because you may get your business online and offline faster than someone who cannot afford a mentor to help them.

With or without a mentor, the Entrepreneur is required to work hard at learning, and applying the lessons to practical situations for their business model.

Education is useless without the ability to apply the concepts to the situations dictated when running a business.

For those without deep pockets, therefore unable to afford a mentor, it is DIY time.

The lessons learned with or without a mentor are the same for all Entrepreneurs,

When working with a mentor, is the mentor you are working with able to tailor the information to your business model.

Not all mentors are equal.

• Do they walk the talk?
• What is their background?
• What do they know about your business niche?
• What are they selling beside their time?
• Are they readily available for questions?
• How long have they been mentoring?
• Are they easy to work with?
• Are they teaching how to apply their knowledge?
• Do you understand what they are teaching?
• Do they teach customer service?

Working without a mentor is not as easy as working with a mentor, but the lessons are the same, and it takes time and hard work to make any business a success.

You can find a plethora of people that are ascribing that you should outsource much of the daily chores of a business, the problem is in the fact that they don’t tell you how to pay for outsourcing, in addition, not all outsources are of the caliber to perform with honesty, integrity, and quality.

Bad outsourcers are a reflection of your business, not the outsourcers since their name is not mentioned, your business, which is you, is the one whose reputation suffers.

A business is a reflection of the person running it. You are the brand, you are branding your morals and integrity; do it wrong and your business will suffer.

Marketing Automation is NOT a Marketing System

Automation is only a tool. You may use it to drive traffic to your site, but will automation deliver engaging content for the context of your message and your call to action.

Automation will not because there is no human component involved.

How will customers know whom to contact for help or questions if all they get is automation?

Think call tree when you call a business, and then you are pushing this button or that button for some option, what about talking with a human that can handle your question or problem.

No one likes call trees, most people want to talk to someone in their language that they can understand to resolve the issue the customer has.

A Marketing System has many Components

From one dictionary, defines “System” as, an ordered manner; orderliness by virtue of being methodical and well organized.

What are the Components of a Marketing System?

  • Building relationships
  • Multi-channel approach, (Web Presence, Social Media, Mobile, etc.)
  • A Website
  • A blog
  • Single point of contact information
  • Authentic
  • Open
  • Availability
  • Clear message
  • Online and Offline
  • Networking
  • Reputation
  • Brand building
  • Brand recognition
  • Domain name
  • Use only true SEO; not just keywords or keyword phrases; (On page SEO, honest backlinks, etc.)

The most important part of a marketing system is the marketing strategy. So what is a strategy? A strategy is the plan of action chosen to implement the system components into a whole.

Automation cannot help you here, this is a job for humans, and where a business can explain why someone should hire them for a specific project, or ongoing work.

Someone needs to establish a strategy for the marketing components because without it, businesses are not marketing effectively.
