Writing as a hobby is writing for you without promotion and publicizing.
Many people say they want to write a book, but can come up with more excuses as to why they don’t write a single word. This is a want to be hobbyist; not someone who knows that writing is a business.
Make no mistake; writing is definitely a business.
If you write copy as a freelancer, do you expect to receive payment? Guess what, you are an entrepreneur running a small businessperson. Although, this is a simple example, for potential clients to locate you, you must brand yourself just like any business.
If you are an author, you need a platform, and start promoting your book long before it’s completed. The platform is how you entice readers to care about your book, and preorder it.
They call this promotion, marketing, advertising, and branding you as an author. You as an author become a business. All of this for good, bad, or ugly is the side of writing that many would be writers either learn the hard way, or someone tells them about it.
Since writing is a business, if you want to write, you will make time to write, hone your craft and think of writing as the business it is.
If you have deep pockets, you can outsource much of this work, if not; you are stuck with doing it yourself.
Running a business can be daunting, but there is no way around the fact that writing is a business and you need to respect that fact.
Run your writing business, and only publish quality. Think about you as a brand because you are your brand.
