“Are You a Freelance Whore?” was a question posted in a newsletter from Remarkablogger; asked readers to comment.

This brought back a post I wrote some time ago “Why do I want to Write?”

For those that are or wish to be freelance writers, there are many questions that they must ask of themselves:

  • What skill set to you bring to writing?
  • Do you want to be a generalist or a specialist?
  • Do you have a passion for writing?
  • Why do you want to freelance?
  • Are you able to work in solitude?
  • Are you able to ignore distractions?
  • Are you considering freelancing to make loads of money?
  • Have you thought about the type freelancing you want to do?

I work as a freelance writer, editor, book reviewer and am learning marketing. Marketing has to be a part of the business plan for your freelancing. There are many ways both online and off to market your business. The way you choose to market it, is up to you. Everyone works differently. Clients don’t come to you just because you call yourself a freelancer; you need to actively pursue them.

Not all clients are a fit for you and your business. The point is, do you take anything just to make money, or do you work for what you’re worth?

I have turned down jobs because the pay was too low for the time I would spend doing the job. I have also turned down job due to ethical principles. I do not work just to make money.

Whether you take any assignment is up to you; I will not take just any assignment. Assignments need to be ethical, well paying, and fall in line with my moral principles and integrity.
